The style was based on the Oxbridge model of academic buildings surrounding cloistered quadrangles. The two quadrangles on either side of the library with linked arcades have become a much-admired feature. After the Depression and the Second World War, no further Gothic buildings were constructed. Roll increases led to disfiguring alterations and additions, as well as the erection of a host of temporary structures.
Eventually it became clear that a new site was needed. Students and staff shifted to the Ilam campus and the College became home to the Christchurch Arts Centre. In recent times a major conservation project has been undertaken to restore and strengthen the buildings for future generations. The Arts Centre today is a unique and colourful complex that promotes the growth of arts and crafts in Christchurch. Visitors are entertained by buskers, and enjoy live music and fine food against the historic backdrop of the Centre.
